Kevin Holland had no answer to Michael Page’s unorthodox striking.
As a part of the UFC 299 main card at the Kasia Center in Miami, Page (22-2 MMA, 1-0 UFC) performed well in his Octagon debut as he defeated Holland (25-11 MMA, 12-8 UFC ) defeated. In their welterweight bout, he earned a unanimous score of 29–28 from the official judges.
UFC fans enjoyed Page’s unique style and his flair for the dramatic, from his walkout inspired by WWE’s Undertaker to the end of the fight.
Page landed a leg kick, followed by a blitz at the start of round 1. Page began to taunt Holland, who responded with a leg kick. Holland won, but Page walked free. Page jumped in with a big elbow that connected. Page then landed a body kick and followed it up with a big right hand to initiate the clinch. Page landed another big landing right and a spinning back elbow, which connected briefly to end the round.
“MVP” started with a spinning back kick and Holland countered with a big right hand. Holland went back to the clinch, but couldn’t stop Page there. Page continued to find home for the right, but slipped on a kick attempt which allowed Holland to jump on him and pin him to the mat. Holland applied a choke for a while and landed some big ground and pound. With less than two minutes remaining the page exploded. Page appeared to be hitting Holland with great authority.
At the beginning of Round 3, Page did not shake Holland’s hand and dropped him with a one-two combination, which upset Holland. Page apologized. Page began to frustrate Holland as he continued to land heavy shots. Holland mocked Page’s taunting and pinned him against the fence as the bell rang.
After 19 fights under the Bellator banner, Page successfully made his highly anticipated UFC debut. The 36-year-old striker has a style that will give many of his peers in the 170-pound division trouble in future fights.
