LINCOLN, Nebraska (KOLN) – University of Nebraska athletic director Trev Alberts is leaving the Huskers to take the same position at Texas A&M University.
At approximately 5 p.m. Wednesday, a University of Nebraska athletics source confirmed reports that had been circulating throughout the day and Texas A&M issued a press release announcing the hiring. They will hold a press conference early next week to introduce Alberts as their new AD.
The following email was sent by Alberts to the athletic staff on Wednesday afternoon.
University of Nebraska Interim President Chris Kabourek released the following statement Wednesday afternoon:
“A short time ago, Trev Alberts informed me that he has accepted the position of athletic director at Texas A&M, effective Friday.
I am disappointed to see Trev leave, but I am grateful for his 15 years of service to the University of Nebraska. Both the Mavericks and Huskers achieved great accomplishments under Trev’s leadership and we wish him and his family all the best.
We have incredible momentum in Husker athletics thanks to the hard work and dedication of all of our staff, coaches and student-athletes. We will not pause. As I have said many times, I have never been more excited about the future of the University of Nebraska and the opportunities we have to work together toward our vision of competing at the highest level in all aspects. I am confident that we will find a visionary leader who will build on the great work that Trev has done and keep the Huskers at the forefront of this changing landscape of college athletics.
In the meantime, my immediate focus is on doing everything possible to support our student-athletes, coaches and staff. I intend to name an interim AD soon and quickly begin the process for a national search for our next leader.”
Texas A&M President Mark A. Welsh III said that Alberts’ strong business acumen, range of experience and leadership abilities make him the ideal choice to oversee A&M athletics, which has more than 650 teams in the Southeastern Conference in 20 varsity sports. Student-athletes are competing.
“With Trev’s expertise, the Aggies are poised to not only achieve excellence on the fields, track and court, but also successfully navigate the multifaceted intersection of sports, commerce and student-athlete empowerment,” Welsh said. “He has a deep understanding of the complex business of athletics and the evolving landscape of college athletics, particularly in the area of name, image and likeness (NIL).”
Welsh said: “I can’t imagine a better person to lead the Aggie athletics program into the future.”
just before 9 a.m. Houston Chronicle It was first reported that Alberts was targeted to become the next athletic director at Texas A&M University. This news surprised everyone.
When 10/11 contacted the University of Nebraska for comment Wednesday morning, Melissa Lee, chief communications officer for the University of Nebraska, said, “Trev has not informed President Kabourek that he has accepted another opportunity.” Chris Kabourek has been serving as interim president of the University of Nebraska since Jan. 1, after Ted Carter left to become president of The Ohio State University in Columbus.
When asked about Alberts’ possible departure to Texas A&M, Nebraska Governor – and former Nebraska football player and NU Regent – Jim Pilen said, “I love Trev Alberts.” is a leader in athletics and from my seat, Trev is what Nebraska deserves and we need him to lead our athletic department. We have one of the best athletic departments in the United States. What we do for the 600 student-athletes He’s incredible. It’s important to all of us and from my place we have to make sure Trev knows how much we appreciate him and the need to keep him here. He’s in demand all over the country.”
Alberts, a University of Nebraska alumnus and former All-American Husker football player, signed a new contract in November to keep him at the University of Nebraska through 2031, although the contract eliminated loss compensation that Alberts had to pay to the university. Will have to pay. Leaving for another opportunity. Alberts’ base salary at Nebraska was $1.7 million, increasing to $2.1 million in 2026. At that time, 10/11 sports director Kevin Szuts sat down for a 1-on-1 interview with Alberts and Alberts said, “I love it.” My job, I feel incredibly honored to be at the University of Nebraska.
Texas A&M was looking to replace Ross Bjork, who left Texas A&M in January to become the Ohio State athletic director.
In July 2021, Alberts was announced as Nebraska’s athletic director, transferring from the University of Nebraska-Omaha. Alberts replaced Bill Moose.
During his time as athletic director, Alberts replaced head football coach Scott Frost with Matt Rhule. Alberts also led the successful ‘Volleyball Day at Nebraska’ in 2023, before the volleyball team played for a national championship. He was also helping lead plans for a major Memorial Stadium renovation. Both the Nebraska men’s and women’s basketball teams are preparing for NCAA Tournament bids.
