Kat Janis, the musician mother who went viral for dedicating her last song to her young son, has died of sarcoma cancer at the age of 31.
Her family announced the news on Instagram, saying that she died peacefully in her childhood home on Wednesday morning and that her brother would continue to manage her brand – which also includes more art she had planned to release.
“We are forever grateful for the outpouring of love Katherine and our family have received over the past few months,” the statement said. “Kat saw her music go places she never expected and found peace in knowing she would continue to provide for her son through her music. This would not have been possible without all of you.”
Her family did not immediately respond to a request for comment Wednesday.
Janice’s song “Dance You Outta My Head”, which was released on January 19, peaked at number 1 on the TikTok Billboard Top 50 and entered the top 10 on Billboard’s Hot Dance/Electronic Songs chart. The song has been streamed over 12.8 million times worldwide on Spotify.
The outpouring of support began when she teased the song in a TikTok video in early January, in which she shared the news that, after a tough battle, “the cancer has won.” He asked the audience to save his final song in advance, announcing that all proceeds from it would be given to his 7-year-old son.
“I’m crawling for my radiation so I can buy myself some time so I can see this song released,” she wrote in another TikTok update a few days before its release. “I have turned over all the rights to my songs to my son so that I can leave something for him. I don’t have much.”
“Dance You Outta My Head” became the soundtrack to nearly 200,000 videos on TikTok as Internet users shared dance videos set to the catchy pop tune. Influencers like Charli D’Amelio also used the sound, asking their viewers to stream the song.
Janis told TODAY.com in an interview last month that the song is about “feeling like yourself, you’re at the top of your mood.” He said he was overwhelmed by the support he received.
“I really wasn’t expecting to be here,” she said. “I truly believe it is a miracle to be able to see it. I am very happy to be here.”
Janice had been sharing updates online about her cancer journey since being diagnosed with sarcoma, a rare malignant tumor, in her scalene muscle in 2022. In November 2021 she initially noticed a hard lump in her neck, which over time She has grown up.
In July 2022, he announced from his hospital bed that he was cancer free. But last year he learned that the cancer had returned, this time in his lungs. Last month, she shared online that her tumors had almost tripled overnight and she is now at home in the hospital.
Janice’s last TikTok video, posted on February 19, was of her dueting (or sharing her side-by-side reaction) to a cover of “Dance You Outta My Head.” He wrote in the video that the song has taken on a bigger meaning for him after the support he received from strangers online.
“I will no longer be trapped in this body. I will dance again ❤️” she wrote. “I hope to see you all there ❤️”
