Deadpool star Ryan Reynolds has expressed surprise that Disney allowed the Deadpool and Wolverine filmmakers to go as R-rated as they have with the upcoming Marvel film.
Deadpool and Wolverine is the first R-rated film from Disney and the MCU, and based on the teaser trailers, contains several fourth wall-breaking jokes at Disney’s expense.
Speaking to Fandango’s Jacqueline Cooley to promote ticket sales, Reynolds discussed the importance of Disney’s decision to trust director Shawn Levy when it came to how far to push Deadpool and Wolverine’s extraordinary visuals and dialogue. The matter came to be decided.
“I’m really proud of the work they’ve done,” Reynolds said. “I think it’s a huge step for them. It adds a whole new flavor to this kaleidoscope of companies and different people that they’ve always been entertaining.
“Although I was surprised that they let us go as Hard R… but I’m so grateful. I mean, there’s no other way to do it. For this character and this world and especially Logan is a Being an R-rated movie, I felt like it was the most complete version of Wolverine or Logan that we’ve ever seen, so it really gave us a lot of freedom to just do R-rated things. Not exploiting ratings, but actually allowing us to do anything and everything in a world where anything and everything is possible.
Deadpool & Wolverine is not only Disney and the MCU’s first R-rated film, but it is the only MCU film scheduled to release in 2024. Elsewhere in the interview, Wolverine star Hugh Jackman insisted that when he said he was finished playing the X-Man following the release of Logan, “I really thought I was done.” But he returned to the role after feeling uneasiness while driving.
Jackman said, “I was driving, I was on my way, I was just driving and literally a flash of lightning lit up in me this realization that I wanted to do this movie with Ryan, Deadpool and Wolverine. Want to bring you back together.” “And Jacqueline, I swear to you, when I said I was done I really thought I was done.
“But in my mind, ever since I saw Deadpool 1, I felt like those two characters were meant to be together, I knew it. I knew that’s what the fans wanted. People have been talking about these two ever since I got the claws.
“So it was always there, but I just knew. And I really couldn’t wait to arrive. As soon as I arrived, I called Ryan and I just said, let’s do this. Like, I didn’t call my agent, no one. I had to call my agent and say, Oh, by the way, I just committed to a movie!
“Sometimes in life things are thrown at you very clearly, and when that happens I’ve learned you just have to jump, and move forward.”
It was recently revealed in an interview that Kevin Feige had initially told Hugh Jackman not to return as Wolverine after Logan. The Marvel Studios president said he was as emotional as everyone else when Logan in 2017 marked the perfect conclusion to Jackman’s character as the mutant hero.
Deadpool and Wolverine will weave their title characters into the MCU when they arrive in theaters on July 26, 2024.
