The opening round of the 2024 NIT Tournament featured upsets and a thrilling finale on Tuesday. The fun began when Ohio State held a late rally to defeat Cornell 88–83. Reigning NIT champion North Texas upset LSU, while Boston College also won on the road vs. Providence 62–57.
Despite Xavier star Desmond Cloud scoring a game-high 30 points, Georgia won 78–76. The Bulldogs led by as many as 23 points in the second half before the Musketeers put it away.
When Minnesota trailed Butler by one point with less than five seconds remaining, Elijah Hawkins drilled a pair of free throws and helped his team hold on at the other end and win 73–72. Iowa defeated Kansas State 91–82 behind 30 points from Peyton Sandfort, and USF advanced with an 83–77 win over UCF.
