Keegan-Michael Key brought his usual hosting A-game to the 2024 NFL Honors, specifically taking on the Baker Mayfield joke.
Keegan-Michael Key is no stranger to great sports humor – he starred in several memorable sports-themed sketches on the seminal Comedy Central sketch series Key & Peele, such as the East/West Bowl, the Excessive End Zone Celebration, and the definitive Aaron Rodgers was nicknamed AARon.
But Keegan-Michael Key’s latest athletic laughs these days are coming from his hosting duties at sports awards shows, most recently Thursday night’s 2024 NFL Honors. One of his best jokes focused on the resurgence of Baker Mayfield while playing for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers last season. Mayfield was nominated for Comeback Player of the Year after leading the Bucs to the playoffs and wild-card victory, and Key thanked Mayfield during his monologue.
“Baker Mayfield is with us tonight,” Key began. “Baker, I have to tell you brother, I’m very impressed with what you’ve accomplished this season… It’s not often that a guy moves to Florida and increases His reputation,” to which Mayfield as well as the rest of the crowd laughed loudly.
“So… good for you, I’m proud of you,” Key said.
Congratulations to Key for making the hot mess state of Florida the laughingstock of Florida, not Mayfield, who actually deserved praise for his efforts this season.
There’s no word on whether Florida Governor Ron DeSantis — whose fondness for picking ill-advised fights with Florida’s critics has been well-documented — would object to Key’s comments, but for DeSantis, there’s no reason for DeSantis to be such a comedian. It would be wise to avoid confrontation with someone whose intelligence is equally sharp. keys.
Keegan-Michael Key also dished out some pretty nice zingers about Taylor Swift, Travis Kelce, Peyton Manning, Bill Belichick and the Carolina Panthers. It was all a lot of fun as the 2024 NFL Honors presented its athletes with the biggest awards of the season after a particularly exciting performance this year.
