In the two-episode premiere, now streaming on Disney+, the Jedi’s light is being extinguished by a cunning assassin who seeks revenge. To celebrate the series’ debut, StarWars.com invited the cast to introduce themselves and their characters. “I’ve got my first picks for everybody,” creator and showrunner Leslye Headland said of the cast.
And now you can meet the latest heroes and criminals Star Wars the galaxy, from the mysterious Mai to the legendary Jedi Master Sol.
Amandla Stenberg – Mae
Star Amandla Stenberg plays the assassin Mai, a mysterious masked warrior seeking revenge against the Jedi Order.
“For Mae, loyalty to her family is the most important thing in the world,” says Stenberg. “She’s spent her life developing a kind of masterful skill set.”
Behind the scenes, Stenberg worked on the physical training needed to bring the character to life. A few weeks before learning the first fight choreography for the noodle bar sequence, Stenberg was in the stunt gym, where she learned the basics for the physically challenging role.
Lee Jung-jae – Jedi Master Soul
Emmy winner Lee Jung-jae brings tremendous compassion to the role of Jedi Master Sol, whose deep sense of empathy inspires his life’s work as a guardian of peace, working to protect those who cannot protect themselves. “Master Sol is very powerful in the Force and is greatly respected by his comrades,” says the actor. “He is incredibly warm-hearted.”
Being cast was like a dream come true for an old fan of mine. “I can’t forget the first time I saw it Star Wars in the theater,” says Lee. “The shock, the tension and the emotion. Honestly, I can’t believe I played a part in it Star WarsI’m still trying to keep calm about it.”
Manny Jacinto – Quimir
Headland wrote the character of Quimir with actor Manny Jacinto in mind. “It’s really hard to believe,” he says. “The fact that Leslie thought of me for this role…it’s unreal. I feel incredibly lucky. I constantly have moments like this that surprise me even today. I don’t think it’s ever stopped. The first time I walked onto the set — just seeing the set, all the backgrounds and the props — I kept repeating over and over, ‘Oh my gosh, we’re doing Star Wars,
When we meet Jacinto’s character at a drugstore in Olega, he’s already spent time as a smuggler and trader, in the style of the badass Han Solo before him. “He spends his time at the drugstore, maybe drinking a little too much, maybe sleeping a little too much,” Jacinto says. “He doesn’t really have any ambitions. He’s basically just trying to find his way and ends up reluctantly joining May and her mentor on this mission.”
Carrie-Anne Moss – Jedi Master Indara
As Jedi Master Indara, Carrie-Anne Moss embodies a powerful Jedi who is both skilled in combat and commands respect. “She’s very fierce and very strong with her abilities and humanity,” says Moss. “I love playing her. I work from the inside out. It’s hard to explain what she’s like on the outside.”
Moss trained for about three weeks for the role prior to production, preparing for action and stunt combat, including the fight between Indara and May shown in the trailer. “I loved it. It’s challenging, you know, your body hurts, but you love it,” she says.
Charlie Barnett – Jedi Knight Yorde Fandor
Actor Charlie Barnett is a longtime fan. Star Wars Galaxy has a deep appreciation for the storytelling art of Lucasfilm Animation. star Wars The Clone Wars And Star Wars: The Bad Batch. In Yord Funder, he introduces a disciple of the sacred Jedi-texts, who is devoted to the ideals of the Order he serves and the High Republic. “He’s a committed Jedi Knight, who is invested in the Council, the Republic, and the furtherance of peace and justice,” Barnett says. “He’s one of the Jedi who lives in a black and white kind of world. I often thought of him as a police force guy who is so committed to his job and justice that he doesn’t really see the levels or layers of justice that actually exist.”
Yorda follows the letter of the law, an aspect of his personality that is immediately apparent from his meticulous appearance and recently ironed Jedi robes. “It’s all about rules and structure. He has no room for the uncontrolled and I think this is, in a way, his response to trying to control his existence and the world around him.”
Daffney Keen – Padawan Jakey Lone
Like Yord, Daffney Keen’s Padawan Jeki Lone, who is half Theelin and half human, adheres to a rigid understanding of the Jedi Order’s belief system. Jeki is committed to enforcing the rules as needed as she embarks on her first mission away from the temple on Coruscant. “Jekie Lone is a young, dedicated Padawan who is brilliant and intelligent beyond her years,” says Keen. “I love Jeki. I love how she grows on the show. She starts out as really rigid and rule-prone. I think what makes her a great Jedi is her ability to learn and grow. She’s smart.”
Being cast in this role gave Keane the opportunity to work alongside Jackie’s on-screen master, Lee Jung-jae as Master Soul. She says, “I got to spend time with Lee Jung-jae, who is a master himself.”

Rebecca Henderson – Jedi Master Vernestra Ravoh
fans of Star Wars: The High Republic The books and comics feature the Mirialan Jedi from her youth, but actor Rebecca Henderson’s character was also inspired by other silver screen stars, including Meryl Streep’s character. the devil Wears Prada“When I started to imagine who Vernestra Roh was at this point in her life, I looked at a lot of older, respected actresses in the world of cinema and their performances,” says Henderson. The actor also worked with two movement coaches to bring gravitas to her performance. “It was really important that you could see that there was a lot going on inside her, but she couldn’t really show it,” says Henderson. “When Vernestra speaks, she can look behind her, above her, below her and all around her. I worked with that kind of energy, which I took out of Rebecca and into this very special older person.”
When we meet this incarnation of Master Roh, she is an Elder at the Jedi Temple on Coruscant. “Vernestra is a respected Jedi Master, over 100 years old. She’s been around so long that I think she’s seen a lot,” she continues. Henderson immediately fell in love with the character of Vernestra on the page. “When I was reading the script and I saw the word Vernestra I was like, ‘Who is this?’ I loved her first line. I loved her first scene. I like Vernestra more than any character I’ve ever played, for sure.”
Dean-Charles Chapman – Jedi Master Torbin
As the mysterious Jedi Master Torbin, actor Dean-Charles Chapman hopes fans will recognize a key element of his character: “He’s kind.”
Stationed at a Jedi outpost on the world of Oleg, fans still don’t know much about Torbin’s story, but Chapman is excited for the series to unfold. “It’s a very action-heavy show, with a mix of mystery, suspense and the thriller aspect of the show,” he says. “The action is a driving force.”
Jonas Suotamo – Jedi Master Kelnaka
Joonas Suotamo has been a part of it Star Wars in the Galaxy since he was first cast as Chewbacca, Han Solo’s Wookiee co-pilot originally played by the late Peter Mayhew, starting in the sequel trilogy and Solo: A Star Wars StoryBut Jedi Master Kelnakaa gave Suotamo the chance to help create a new beloved character while challenging himself as an artist.
“When I first heard about it I realised this was not going to be my usual thing Star Wars “I couldn’t wait to test myself and see how far I could go in this new role,” says Suotamo. “When I found out it was going to involve Kelnaka, who is a Jedi, I was immediately excited. It intrigued me and I knew there would be something fun to do with this role.”
In this part, Suotamo gets the chance to wear a Jedi garb and carry his first lightsaber. “We’ve never seen a Wookiee Jedi on screen,” says Suotamo. “And it immediately sparked my imagination. How does he behave? What has he learned during his training to be a Jedi? And how does he carry himself? Kelnaka is a very calm but fierce Jedi who you don’t want to mess with.”
Jodie Turner-Smith – Mother Aeneas
Though we have yet to meet Jodie Turner-Smith’s Mother Anicia on screen, early glimpses in the trailer show a striking figure who embodies strength and grace in equal measure. “She’s extremely protective of her family, her children, her kids, and she’s doing her best to preserve their way of life,” says Turner-Smith. The actor previously worked with episodic director Kogonada on the film After YangThat’s what inspired him to consider her for the role, she says. “He thought a lot about a conversation we had during the promotion of our first movie. It was shortly after my daughter was born and I was still very close to the process of giving birth and being a new mom,” she recalls. “So, he called me up and said he really felt like this character would be perfect for me to play.”
Turner-Smith was immediately drawn to the regal nature of the Force-wielding witch. “They said, ‘She’s a powerful witch mother.’ And I said, ‘Say less,’” Turner-Smith recalls. “I really got to give birth to Mother Anicia and Leslye (Headland) is a very supportive person. Her enthusiasm is contagious and she created something where the writing was great, the characters were very well thought out and well crafted, and I was going to be in the hands of one of my favorite directors I’ve ever worked with. So I was ready. I was totally ready.”
