SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) – Rain is rare for Padres home games, and even rarer for opening weekend, but it can happen.
The Padres define a rainout as when a game is called due to inclement weather before it becomes an official game, which occurs after four and a half innings of play (if the home team is ahead) or after five full innings of play (if The home team is behind or if the game is tied).
In team history, it has rained out in San Diego a total of 19 times. Four of those rainouts have occurred at Petco Park since the ballpark opened in 2004.
The most recent rainfall occurred as a result of Tropical Storm Hillary last year. The game, originally scheduled for August 20 against the Arizona Diamondbacks, was rescheduled to the previous day as part of a split doubleheader.
The only other Padres home opener series rainouts, ironically, both occurred against the Giants, including one game in 2006 and two games in 1975.
The Padres’ home opener against the Giants on Thursday was bright and sunny; However, that is unlikely to happen in the second half of the series this weekend.
Friday’s games should have similar weather to Thursday’s, but a storm is brewing for games played on Saturday and Sunday.
The rainy season looks set to begin Saturday morning with heavy rain expected on Saturday afternoon and evening. Once the rains arrive, there is a possibility of heavy rain for a few hours.
There is a chance of some intermittent rain on Sunday as the center of the system hovers over Southern California, so the rain will not be persistent, but there will be a chance of thunderstorms that day.
Fans should be prepared with a poncho and extra layers.
