PITTSBURGH (KDKA) – Former WWE star Michael Jones, better known by his wrestling name Virgil, has died at the age of 61.
WWE announced this news on Wednesday In a post on social media platform, formerly known as Twitter. The cause of his death is unknown.
The post read, “WWE is saddened to learn that Michael Jones, known to WWE fans as Virgil, has passed away. WWE offers its condolences to Jones’ family, friends and fans.”
A post on Jones’ verified Instagram account also confirmed the news.
“There’s so much to say and would love to share stories but for now it’s a hard day because our friend is gone. All we ask at this time is to remember him as the man he was. Wishing you unlimited pasta in heaven. We love you Mike,” the post said in part.
According to CBS Sports, news of Jones’ death was first shared in a Facebook post by wrestling referee and Jones’ friend Mark Charles III.
Charles III said on Wednesday, “My dear friends, it is with great sadness that I bring to the Jones family the news of the passing of our beloved Michael Jones, whom we knew as Virgil, Vincent, Sol Train Jones and others. Loved.” “Virgil passed away peacefully in the hospital this morning and I ask that you pray for him and his family. May his memory last forever!”
Jones, who was born in Wilkinsburg, was best known as Ted DiBiase’s bodyguard in the WWF during the late 1980s and early 1990s. As per CBS Sports report, he fought his last match in 2020. He began wrestling professionally in 1985 and joined the WWF in 1986, reports ESPN.
