Just weeks before hurricane season begins, thousands of homeowners in Southwest Florida are being dropped by their home insurance companies. ASI-Progressive’s papers started going out this week. The company said last year that it planned to eliminate about 100,000 policies. John Cunniff of Bonita Springs said he received a letter and immediately started looking for replacement coverage. “It just says they’re reducing their hurricane risk,” Cunniff said. Many people are in the same boat, and in many cases, people are being forced to pay more for coverage. “I think it’s a really big problem for a lot of people,” Cunniff said. The letters are surprising to many, even though Progressive announced a year ago that they were cutting back in Florida because of the risks. Doug Nellans is an agent with The InsuranceCenter in Fort Myers and said he has hundreds of customers who are affected by the move. “Fortunately ASI-Progressive has partnered with another insurance company to effectively protect many policyholders and offer them an alternative policy before the expiration date,” Nellans said. While many policyholders are concerned about sticker shock when going with a new company, Nellans said that shouldn’t be an immediate concern for those who are being picked up by loggerhead insurance. “Loggerhead understands this and they have promised to make every effort to reduce or remove that sticker shock, at least for the early stages of this transition,” Nellans explained. , many policyholders will have to find another company, and it may not be that easy because Cunniff said they had few options. “Coverage was very limited,” he said. With only 34 days left until hurricane season begins, many people are struggling to make sure they have a company in place when their policy expires. Progressive is expected to continue sending these non-renewal notices in May and June.
