Florida baseball will face a familiar foe at the start of the 2024 College World Series.
The Florida Gators (34-28) will begin CWS play on Saturday against No. 3 national seed Texas A&M (7 p.m., ESPN) in Omaha. TAMU won game two in its host Super Regional against Oregon, beating the Ducks 15-9 on Sunday night.
Florida won 2 of 3 games in its SEC play opener against Texas A&M at Condron Family Ballpark in Gainesville on March 15-17. UF beat the Aggies 8-6 on Friday night in the opener of the three-game series, lost 10-6 on Saturday and won 4-2 on Sunday.
Texas A&M entered the CWS despite losing one of its top players — outfielder Braden Montgomery — to a lower leg injury he suffered while sliding into home plate against Oregon on Saturday. Entering Saturday, Montgomery hit .322/.730/.455 and hit a career-best 27 home runs.
Florida advanced to the CWS for the 14th time in school history and ninth time under head coach Kevin O’Sullivan after posting an 11–10, 13-inning win over Clemson in the NCAA Clemson Super Regional, two games to one. The Gators have won five consecutive NCAA Tournament games after an up-and-down regular season.
“We never lost faith in our team,” O’Sullivan said. “I think we weren’t very consistent. There’s a reason for that. Our pitching was really young. They just kept hanging in and got better and better, but there comes a point when you get into the tournament, everybody starts with a clean slate and I think that’s the message, understand that and everybody has the same record.”
