New York — Martin Luther King Jr. Day is being celebrated with a number of events honoring the work and legacy of the late Dr. King.
This year also marks 60 years of the passage of the Civil Rights Act of 1963, in the passage of which he played an important role.
Below is a sample of some of the celebrations and commemorations around the region.
New York City
In New York City, Queens Borough President Donovan Richards and the Parks Department scheduled a clean-up of the park at the Flushing Bay Promenade in East Elmhurst at 9 a.m.
The Brooklyn Academy of Music will host its 38th annual tribute in Brooklyn, where Mayor Eric Adams is expected to speak at 10 a.m.
Eighth grade students from Manhattan Country School will also march from the Harriet Tubman Memorial in Harlem at 10 a.m.
The Interfaith Met Council plans to pack food and emergency supplies for members of the city’s Muslim community on Lexington Avenue from 12 p.m.
The Rev. Al Sharpton is expected to participate in the annual Martin Luther King, Jr. Policy Forum at the NAN House of Justice in Harlem at 1:30 p.m.
long Island
On Long Island, the Village of Hempstead will host a parade starting at 9 a.m. from the Village Hall on James M. Garner Way. Organizers plan to honor Dr. Emile Naclerio, a Harlem Hospital doctor who is credited with saving Dr. King’s life when he was stabbed in 1958.
Mount Sinai Hospital will also stop for a prayer service at the Mount Sinai South Nassau Conference Center in Oceanside at 10 a.m.
new Jersey
New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy will speak from Mount Olive Baptist Church in East Orange at 11 a.m.
Congressman Josh Gottheimer is scheduled to help Community Baptist Church of Englewood pack supplies for hungry children at 11:45 a.m.
Newark will also host a march for liberation in honor of Dr. King at 2 p.m.
