The 28-year-old Elliott was released by Dallas in the 2023 offseason and headed to New England, signing with the Patriots in August and finding moderate success in a struggling offense. He led the Pats with 642 rushing yards as the pace was slowed by injuries to Raimondre Stevenson. Still, Elliott averaged just 3.5 yards per carry, giving more statistical credence that his best Sundays are behind him.
Still, Elliott’s return to Dallas should provide some benefits beyond nostalgia. The former two-time rushing champion, who was taken fourth overall in the 2016 NFL Draft by the Cowboys, still has a nose for the end zone and is typically a sterling pass protector.
He’ll be joining a backfield that’s still hinting at a vacancy for a true RB1, as Elliott will be part of a depth chart that includes Rico Dowdle, Deuce Von and Royce Freeman.
After announcing that his club was going “all-in” on more than one occasion this year, Jerry Jones is unlikely to satisfy a fanbase looking for major changes to the roster.
But Elliott’s return is sure to generate some excitement and anticipation. Not to mention, since this ‘guy is back in town, this could be his last ride, and it would be fitting if it came with a star on his helmet.
