As expected, Billie Eilish has officially announced her third full-length album: “‘Hit Me Hard and Soft,’ my third album, is coming out May 17th.” The cover of the album, which depicts Eilish swimming towards an open white door underwater. “I’m so crazy writing this right now, I’m nervous and excited. Not doing it solo, I want to give it to you all at once. Finneas and I really couldn’t be more proud of this album and we absolutely can’t wait for you to hear it. Love you, love you, love you.”
The official press announcement of the album was also accompanied by a new photo of Eilish underwater, similar to the album cover:
The album’s controversial title – which is in all-caps like her previous releases, as opposed to the all-lowercase type used by Eilish in recent years – is at least partially explained in a press announcement that followed her post. What followed was: “The album does exactly what the title suggests: bending genres and defying trends along the way, hitting you hard and soft both lyrically and sonically. ‘Hit Me Hard’ And Soft’ journeys through a vast and sweeping audio landscape, immersing listeners in an entire spectrum of emotions. This is what multiple Grammy and Academy Award winners do best, putting Billie Eilish on one of the best songs of her time. Continues to prove himself as an exciting songwriter.
As usual, the album was written by Eilish and her brother and musical collaborator Finneas, who also produced the album.
The announcement states that the album will be available on all digital platforms, and, reflecting Eilish’s recent comments regarding the environmental waste of a physical product like vinyl, further states, “Reduce waste and combat climate change.” In constant effort; Released on the same day in limited variants in all physical formats, with the same track-listing and using 100% recyclable materials. Eilish has been speaking about the album for several weeks, and has been teasing the album with a series of billboards in major cities around the world for at least a week. The billboards did not bear the Grammy- and Oscar-winning artist’s name, but included her familiar “bloosh” symbol and fragments of the song, including lines like “Did I cross the line?”, “I try to stay in black.” Were somewhere. White” and “That’s the headlights I’m the deer.”
Eilish’s team used a similar strategy to tease the release of her second full-length, “Happily Ever After”, in 2021.
While Eilish and her brother/musical collaborator Finneas have spent the past few months releasing their song “What Was I Made For?” from the blockbuster “Barbie” movie and soundtrack. They have not released any new albums. Since “Happily Ever After” in July 2021, however, he has toured and released other material.
Eilish confirmed in late February that her new album had been mastered, which is typically the final stage of an album before it is produced and sent to streaming services.
He and Phineas have said “What was I made for?” The floodgates were opened after a hiatus in coming up with material for Eilish’s third full-length album.
“There’s a whole album of music coming out,” Eilish said in September. “We’re in the final stages of building it, so it doesn’t mean it’s going to arrive, but it’s getting there and it’s very exciting.”
