Thomas Kelly’s supernatural drama “The Animal Kingdom” and Justin Triet’s Palm d’Or winner “Anatomy of a Fall” lead the race for the 49th César Awards with 12 and 11 nominations, respectively.
Triet’s film, which recently received an impressive five Oscar nominations, and “The Animal Kingdom,” which debuted at Cannes’ Un Certain Regard and won a prize, will compete for top Cesar awards, including best director and film.
“The Animal Kingdom” is an ambitious film that marks a departure from France’s cinema tradition of social realism. It’s both a creature-filled dystopia and a father-son drama (starring Romain Duris and Paul Kircher, both nominated for Cesar Awards), that weaves together some contemporary concerns over the future of the human race. It is produced by Pierre Guyard at Nord Ouest Films and co-produced by Artemis.
Meanwhile, “Anatomy of a Fall” stars German actor Sandra Hüller, nominated for Cesar, Oscar and BAFTA awards, as a novelist who is prosecuted after her husband’s mysterious death in a remote bungalow. The film, which has already won a pair of Golden Globes, is produced by Marie-Ange Luciani at Les Films de Pierre and David Theon at Les Films Pelléas.
Other leading Cesar contenders this year are Jean Hary’s “All Your Faces,” produced by Hugo Célignac’s Chi-Fou-Me and Alain Attal’s Les Films du Trésor, and Cedric Khan’s Cannes Directors’ Fortnight opener “The Goldman Case. “, produced by Benjamin. Elalof at Moonshaker Films. Based on the 1976 trial of radical criminal Pierre Goldman, “The Goldman Case” feels timely as it deals with anti-Semitism, racial discrimination and the flaws of the judicial system. Actor-filmmaker Arthur Harari, who co-wrote “Anatomy of a Fall” with Tritt (his partner), also stars in “The Goldman Case” and is nominated for his supporting role in the film .
“All Your Faces”, which also caused a stir among Caesar Academy members, revolves around criminals and victims of crimes who confront each other under a restorative justice plan. Four of the five spots in the Best Supporting Female category went to “All Your Faces” actresses: Adele Exarchopoulos (“Blue Is the Warmest Color”), Leila Bekhti (“La Source”), Miu-Miu (“The Science of Sleep”). ) ”) and Elodie Bouchez (“Simone: Woman of the Century”).
As previously announced, “Oppenheimer” director Christopher Nolan, along with Agnès Jaoui, a beloved French actor, screenwriter and filmmaker, will receive an honorary Cesar Award during the upcoming ceremony, which will be held on February 23 at the Olympia Concert Hall. Will be done.
