OROVILLE, Calif.— California State Parks announced today that the City of Oroville’s Fourth of July fireworks celebration tomorrow has been canceled for public safety. Due to the massive evacuations and damage caused by the Thompson Fire, State Parks and partner agencies such as CAL FIRE, California Highway Patrol, Butte County Sheriff’s Office, Public Works and City of Oroville staff have a huge number of resources to protect the community and get everyone back home as quickly as possible. These agencies also have staff whose families have been displaced due to these evacuations who are tirelessly assisting the community of Lake Oroville.
All sub-units of the Lake Oroville State Recreation Area (SRA) have been temporarily closed so staff can focus on fire suppression and community safety activities. State Parks anticipates that parks, including camping, will remain closed through Friday, July 5. However, this could be extended depending on fire conditions.
The temporary closures at Lake Oroville SRA are as follows:
- The North Forebay Day Use Area where the fireworks were being planned. The North Forebay is currently being used to coordinate agencies from throughout the northern state that are assisting in the area.
- Several day-use areas and trails will be closed for extended periods of time as they are repaired and made safe again. These areas include the Burma Day Use Area and Diversion Pool and several miles of the Brad Freeman and Dan Beebe trails in the Lakeland areas.
Donations made to the Oroville Chamber of Commerce for fireworks will be used for a community fireworks show to be scheduled by them at a later and secure date. This fireworks show was a specially permitted event with the City of Oroville and the Oroville Chamber of Commerce.
