A father and his teenage son drowned in a lake in Virginia after the child’s father tried to save him, according to authorities.
According to a statement released Sunday by the Louisa County Sheriff’s Office, the incident occurred around 1:10 a.m. Saturday when Louisa County Sheriff’s Office deputies received a call about a drowning child in the area of ​​Carrs Bridge Road in Lake Anna, Virginia — about 60 miles northwest of Richmond.
“While en route, police were informed that the child’s father had attempted to search/rescue his son,” according to police. “It was reported that witnesses saw the father struggling before he also lost sight of him. Several people entered the water in an attempt to locate him but were unsuccessful.”
Louisa County Sheriff’s Office Marine Units, Mineral Volunteer Fire, Lake Anna Volunteer Rescue, Department of Wildlife Resources, and Spotsylvania County Fire & EMS Dive Team divers assisted in locating and recovering the bodies of the 42-year-old father and his 14-year-old son, who were pronounced dead at the scene.
Both victims were then taken to the Medical Examiner’s Office in Richmond for examination.
Authorities have not yet identified the victims, but confirmed none of them were from the area and their names are being withheld until next of kin are notified. The Louisa County Sheriff’s Office does not suspect foul play.
