The Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency (DPAA) today announced that U.S. Air Force Major John CG Kerr, 35, was reported missing during the Vietnam War on April 24, 2024.
On August 22, 1967, Kerr was piloting an A-26A Invader attack aircraft on a solo nighttime armed reconnaissance mission over the Plain of Jars in the Lao People’s Democratic Republic. After Kerr failed to check in via radio and did not return from the mission, US forces conducted an extensive electronic and visual search of the estimated area, which contained extensive enemy defenses, but could not find Kerr or the aircraft. Possibly related to this incident, a New China News Agency broadcast on August 22 reported the shooting down of an American aircraft and the death of its crew members near Ban Ban. On June 4, 1971, Kerr was declared killed in action.
