Basketball Hall of Famer Allen Iverson was honored Friday with a statue outside the Philadelphia 76ers training complex in Camden.
The former MVP and 11-time NBA All-Star will always be shown performing his signature crossover outside the practice facility.
“The Answer” became emotional when discussing the honor in front of his family, teammates and mentors over the years.
Iverson thanked “everyone who had a hand” in the success he achieved during his career, including Hall-of-Fame head coach Larry Brown, who helped lead the team to the NBA Finals in 2001.
“Coach and I didn’t see eye to eye on things, but he wanted the same things I wanted for my career and our team’s goals,” Iverson said. “And once I bought it, it made me an MVP basketball player. It turned us into a team that was a winner that could go to the finals and compete with the best teams.
In 1996, the Sixers selected the guard from Georgetown with the first pick. Iverson won Rookie of the Year and spent the first 12 years of his career with the team. “It doesn’t even feel real,” Iverson said of being honored with a statue after so many years.
“I don’t get nervous too much, but seeing so many people here that I love … just wanted to say all the right things,” Iverson said with tears in his eyes. “I just want you to know how much I appreciate you all… I thank everyone for coming out. Like I said, I thank everyone for playing a role in this and making this dream come true.” I give.
