Chipotle may have started National Burrito Day celebrations early, but plenty of other restaurants are offering deals on Thursday, April 4.
The burrito holiday occurs on the first Thursday of April and usually means burrito lovers can choose from specials and promotions at many Mexican food chains.
The burrito, meaning “little donkey,” likely originated from the mixing of foods in Mexico with Europeans who arrived after the Spanish conquest in the 16th century, wrote Jeffrey Pilcher, a professor of food history at the university. Toronto, in his book “Planet Taco: A Global History of Mexican Food”.
Burros or donkeys likely inspired the name “burrito” because street vendors sold burritos from baskets carried by burros and donkeys often also carried a cylindrical bedroll.
