HARTFORD, Conn. (WTNH) – The University of Connecticut is expanding to the XL Center in Hartford, the school confirmed to News 8 on Friday.
UConn has signed a five-year lease for 49,359 square feet on the third floor of the XL Center and 1,718 square feet on the second floor, opening this fall. The space will be both classrooms, offices and research space previously used for Saint Joseph’s University’s School of Pharmacy.
This space will include the Research Innovation Center, the Connecticut Food Innovation Center, the Institute for Sports Medicine, a psychiatric community clinic, and the Institute for Collaboration on Health, Intervention, and Policy.
Additionally, UConn is considering building student housing in Hartford, and is discussing the possibility with the city.
“Based on the feedback UConn has received, we anticipate that current UConn Hartford students will have a strong interest in living among peers; Students who are in Storrs but will spend a semester or year in Hartford to participate in internships, summer programs, and co-op programs… and other students who choose to attend UConn Hartford to take advantage of a vibrant location. Are interested, diverse city,” university spokeswoman Stephanie Ritz told News 8 in a written statement.
