what to know
The Houston Cougars and Texas A&M Aggies will face off in the second round of the NCAA Tournament on Sunday at the FedExForum at 8:40 p.m. The Cougars picked up an upset win in their last matchup and will be looking to get another win against the 9.5 point favorite Aggies.
In what has become a trend this season, Houston gave its fans another big win on Friday. They could not be stopped as they easily defeated Longwood 86–46. The win was just what the Cougars needed after a 69-41 loss in their previous match.
Houston’s win was a true team effort, with solid performances from several players. Perhaps the best of them was LJ Cryer, who scored 17 points with two steals. Cryer didn’t help Houston’s cause that much against Iowa State last Saturday, but the same can’t be said for this matchup. Damien Dunn was another major contributor, scoring 17 points.
Texas A&M, meanwhile, scored its most points all season en route to success on Friday. They outshot Nebraska with the remaining points and took the game 98–83. After getting the score that high, both teams will probably have to do some extra defensive drills.
Texas A&M’s success was the result of a balanced attack with several players stepping up, but Wade Taylor IV led the way by going 7 of 10 from the arc en route to 25 points and 5 assists. Taylor IV has been in the news recently, scoring 20 or more points the last four times. The team also got some help courtesy of Tyrese Radford, who dropped a double-double on 20 points and ten rebounds.
Houston has been playing incredibly well lately as they have won 12 of their last 13 games, leading them to a nice 31-4 record this season. As for Texas A&M, their win improved their record to 21–14.
When the teams last played in December of 2023, Houston didn’t have much breathing room in their matchup against Texas A&M, but they still walked away with a 70-66 win. Will Houston repeat its success, or does Texas A&M have a better game plan this time? We will find out soon.
