Rutgers football is once again bowl champion.
The Scarlet Knights defeated Miami 31-24 in the Pinstripe Bowl on Thursday at Yankee Stadium. The win marked their first win over the Hurricanes after 11 consecutive shutouts in Big East Days and their first bowl title in nine years.
Celebrations in the stands, on the field, and in the locker room reflected the excitement within the program to achieve this goal, and the Scarlet Knights received high praise from the national media.
Here is a sample of it:
on social media
“I don’t care what Miami’s record is or how many people were missing. Rutgers beating Miami in a bowl game is big for a program that finished with its first winning record since 2014. , Stewart Mandel, The Athletic.
“It has been really amazing to see teams like Kansas, Rutgers and Duke not only make bowl games but win them.” , Nicole Auerbach, The Athletic.
“From one generation to the next… We salute you, Greg Schiano, Kyle Monangai and the rest of Rutgers football! Proud alumni cheering on the future legends from kickoff to the final kneel! What a day to be the Scarlet Knight! Rutgers Nation Are You Ready?! , Shawn Tucker, former Rutgers WR and current Vice President of Athletic Development and Deputy Athletic Director.
“Greg Schiano inherited an absolute mess at Rutgers entering 2020 after going 13-47 from 2015-19. In the fourth year of his second tenure, he produced his first bowl win (and winning season) since 2014. I don’t know who needs to hear this, but the 2023 season was a very good one for Rutgers. , Garrett Stepien, 247Sports.
“What a great way to end the season for Rutgers football. This is further proof that they are heading in the right direction. Really happy for the players who have been associated with this program for the last 4-5 years. It hasn’t been easy. Great building blocks to start the next season. #bowlseason #rutgers, Former Rutgers QB, current radio analyst Mike Teal.
“Yes, Rutgers football beat Miami 31-24 in the Pinstripe Bowl. It’s the first win against Miami since the Scarlet Knights suffered 11 consecutive losses to the Canes. Coach Greg Schiano led Rutgers with pride and passion Asked to play.” , Former Rutgers basketball assistant, current ESPN college basketball analyst Dick Vitale.

,kyle monangaiThe Big Ten’s leading rusher swallowed the Hurricanes on the ground. He ran 25 times for 163 yards and one touchdown. Rutgers rushed for 208 yards as a team – just the second time an opponent has rushed for over 200 against the Hurricanes this season.
Miami did not allow either team to rush for more than 100 yards. North Carolina Success finally came in the sixth game. Five of Miami’s last six opponents have surpassed the 100-yard mark. , The Athletic’s Manny Navarro.
“The bowl loss encouraged the predictable social-media outrage of Cristobal’s critics, who had funny memes roaring online until the final whistle. Theme: You lost…Rutgers!?!? As if it’s a big shock or cause for outrage that a 6-6 team beat a 7-5 team that didn’t feature its starting quarterback and at least six other key starting players.
The rational hope is that Cristobal can turn the program around and reestablish new glory days, rooted in consistently top six national recruiting classes, with the ’24 class rated No. 1 in the ACC. A bowl win would have been the cherry on top of that, another sign of progress, if mostly symbolically.
Especially because losing to 6-6 Rutgers is a particular insult, of all teams, because it shows how far UM has fallen from a program that won five national championships, the last in 2001.
Previously UM was 11–0 vs. Rutgers by a very mediocre margin of 46–10. All 11 meetings were from 1993 to 2003 when both played in the Big East and UM was ranked seven times.” — Greg Cote of the Miami Herald.
“Miami’s defense struggled to stop the Rutgers offensive attack early in the game, giving up 153 yards on the Scarlet Knights’ first three drives.
But the Hurricanes came back and forced Monangai to punt on the next three drives before scoring another rushing touchdown.
Miami entered the game with the nation’s No. 10 rush defense, but ultimately gave up 208 rushing yards, the second most they had surrendered all year. The 292 total yards UM surrendered was the fifth-best game by yardage for the Hurricanes defense this season. , Adam Lichtenstein of the South Florida Sun-Sentinel.
