A long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away, the San Antonio Spurs decided to add a Star Wars theme night to their annual list of promotions and events.
An old Jedi and his daughter began attending these games because it featured their favorite team and their favorite space battle film series.
After moving to San Antonio back in 2014 (talk about time), I remember the Spurs hosted a Star Wars Night in the 2014-15 season. I don’t know how I missed it, but I was heartbroken. Little did I know that this wouldn’t be the last time the Spurs would have one of these.
Having started writing for the PTR a few years ago, I’ve been lucky enough to come across some of these pieces. Unfortunately, I can’t remember the years before that.
Here’s a look at some of the past Star Wars Nights (that I remember):
In 2019, the Spurs styled their logo with a background inspired by the Death Star plans. Definitely my favorite shirts.
And yes, introduction-
I’m pretty sure there will be no in-person basketball in 2020, and therefore no Star Wars Night.
In 2021, it was the great return of the daddy-daughter date night. A Jedi version of Spurs Coyote was added to the image along with a traditional Star Wars shot of C3PO and R2D2 in their souvenir shirt. But it was not a shirt. I remember very well that I walked to the gate. Elizabeth was very excited. This was the first game we had attended in over a year and we were beginning to feel normal. The picture is blurry, but you can see the smile on the child’s face. I’m sure I weighed twice as much.
A large group of fans were welcoming the AT&T Center. These costumes were legit (unlike my Chewbacca onesie Halloween-slash-pajama thing).
Here’s a look at the start of the game.
Two years ago, the Spurs featured Baby Yoda with the theme “The Force is Strong with This One.”
I don’t remember Star Wars Night this season. Please eblo comment if I’m wrong.
My three passions are the San Antonio Spurs, Star Wars, and Foo Fighters. I have very few items of clothing that don’t have this logo on them.
I am fortunate that my daughter has adopted all three of them. We watch the Spurs (and go as often as possible, she’s even blasting the playoffs in the background as I type this), we’ve watched Star Wars movies together (with age-appropriate limits), and Last summer, when I asked Elizabeth what she wanted to do on her 10th birthday, she said she didn’t want to have a birthday party and that she wanted to go see the Foo Fighters in Milwaukee.
I often tell people that I’m crushing this father thing, but the truth is that she’s actually crushing this idea of having a child.
Be sure and add your memories and photos in the comments below.
,If you’re in the San Antonio area today, my neighborhood association is hosting lawnfest With some incredible local musical talent, Nikki Diamonds, Yosha, Kitten Mitten, And fee All performed within walking distance of a beautiful mid-century modern neighborhood. Family friendly and free.,
